Samsung introduced its latest Tizen OS-powered smartphone called the Z3 in India in October last year, after successfully selling its first Tizen offering called the Z1. It is one of the best budget smartphones from the brand to go against the likes of the pocket-friendly Android and Windows Phone OS-powered devices. However, the company has also been introducing other budget Android phones from time to time in the country. The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is one of these devices that is a selfie-centric smartphone with a wide-angle lens.

The Samsung Z3 offers a stylish design with squared corners compared to the rounded corners available on some of company’s budget Android devices. The phone offers a plastic polycarbonate build, measures 7.9mm around the waist and tips the scale at 137 grams. The Galaxy Grand Prime on the other hand sports a dull old Samsung design profile with capacitive buttons below the display, and a plastic body. It measures 8.6mm around the waist and weighs at 156 grams. Overall, the Samsung Z3 is a better and more appealing when compared to the Grand Prime in terms of design.

Display & OS

The Samsung Z3 and Galaxy Grand Prime, both the smartphones offer the same 5-inch screens. However, the Grad Prime gets a TFT screen with a screen resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and a pixel density of 220 pixels per inch. The Samsung Z3 on the other hand offers a better media experience thanks to a Super AMOLED HD display panel with a higher pixel density of 294 pixels per inch. Software wise, the Galaxy Grand Prime runs the dated Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system with the brand’s TouchWiz user interface on top. The Samsung Z3 on the other hand runs Samsung-backed Tizen 2.4 operating system, which utilizes less resources allowing for a smooth lag-free user interface. However, the Z3 offers fewer applications when compared to the millions of apps on the Google Play Store.


The Samsung Z3 is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC7730 processor, which is further supported by 1GB of RAM and a Mali 400 MP2 graphics processor. It has 8GB of internal memory that can be further increased by inserting a microSD card to the device. The Galaxy Grand Prime on the other hand is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, aided by 1GB of RAM and an Adreno 306 GPU. It also offers 8GB of internal storage that can be further increased up to 64GB via a microSD card. Overall, the Galaxy Grand Prime and Samsung Z3, both offer average configuration.


Camera specifications of the Galaxy Grand Prime and Samsung Z3 are quite similar. They have 8-megapixel primary cameras with autofocus and LED flash, and 5-megapixel secondary snapper for selfies and video calling support. The Galaxy Grand Prime was the first smartphone from Samsung to sport a 5-megapixel secondary shooter. Overall, there’s no difference in the camera features of the Grand Prime and Z3.

Connectivity and battery

As far as the connectivity features are concerned, the Galaxy Grand Prime and Samsung Z3, both smartphones come with dual-SIM slots, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, micro-USB 2.0 and A-GPS. The Galaxy Grand Prime gets an additional connectivity option called NFC. As for the battery, they both are loaded with 2,600mAh batteries, which are rated to last around for a day on regular usage.


The Samsung Z3 is a decent smartphone in the sub $133 range that comes with a pretty stable and usable operating system, Super AMOLED screen panels, a decent processor, good camera specs for the asking price and a decent battery life, but lacks third party applications on its store. The Galaxy Grand Prime offers similar specifications as the Z3, but offers users a much larger amount of applications on Play Store and comes with NFC as well. The Samsung Z3 is priced at $124, while the Galaxy Grand Prime is available on the online stores for around $133.
